the basic story of the social murder of 193 people aboard the MS Herald of Free Enterprise is as follows:
demand for VERY FAST service from the higher-ups at Townsend-Thorensen ↓ increased autonomy (no time for oversight or accountability) and specialization (no time (or money 🤪) for redundancy) among crew members ↓ when the boatswain is MIA and the car deck doors are left open, nobody's willing/able to stick around and see them closed, lest they be fired ↓ boat fall over you must pick two: 1. autonomous1 2. large-scale with many moving parts 3. able to mobilize effectively under time pressure speaking of time pressure: every day that passes without a permanent ceasefire and complete divestment from and sanctioning of the state of so-called "Israel" is a day Palestinians are being murdered, their schools and hospitals reduced to rubble, "humanitarian zones" shrinking and shrinking and shrinking, an ever-expanding killing floor. help, please "permanent ceasefire and complete divestment from and sanctioning of the so-called state of 'Israel'" goes up to the federal government by the way. there is no way to achieve this, nor the communist revolution we need to have down the road, without functioning on a large (very large!) scale and so your precious autonomy must go.2 sry. 1it's no coincidence that capitalism's most effective unionbusting tactic, its best line of defense against socialism and communism, is scab creation & individualism. 2with some caveats, ofc. you can be trans and stuff that's fine
in my old car in the rain
in Durango with your friends i find things better left unsaid
DROP THE CHARGES:
today, may 15th, on the 76th anniversary of the Nakba, the mass displacement of Palestinians past and current is all that is in the air. it is all i and my comrades can think about. today is the day the state police came and dismantled the UNM Palestine Encampent. they arrested 7 of us. brutalised, dehumanized us. two of those arrested were journalists, 2 were students. 23 people total (7 on Nakba day, 16 at the Student Union Building) have been arrested for showing their solidarity. a disproportionate amount of them have been queer and trans, facing extra discrimination. today. Nakba Day. what a fucking travesty. free Palestine, end imperialism, end capitalism.
we will not stop. we will not rest. we aren't going anywhere!
i wish you could see us today. i wish you could be here.
yesterday we needed some extra posterboard so i brought over your old signs from Durango city council. i don't know if they ever got used for anything. through no fault of our own they're in a garbage truck now.
sometimes i feel a sort of survivor's guilt |
this song is my measuring stick for the amount of bitter you're allowed to be about a break-up. anything more bitter than this becomes dangerous, i think. in other words, this song is lead but for self-destruction instead of radioactivity

on 24-03-22 i said that this song is the soundtrack to going out and partying and ignoring all your problems. i would like to add another fun interpretation i like: this song is good for wishing, more than anything, you could see someone again and that things could be good.

myth without struggle, babe. it can't fill your heart
"I’m so glad I found this one. It’s a spiritual successor to a bizarre little Japanese fighting game called Neo Aquarium. If you want an idea of what that game was like, just imagine realistic crustaceans that blast the living hell out of each other with neon lasers. The moment I discovered Ace of Seafood in my Steam queue, I knew I had to try it, if only for the novelty of playing a crab armed with phaser cannons.
Before I dive too deep into this one (ha, ocean puns), I’ll admit I played it ahead of time. I planned to give it a test run before my Birthday Backlog Bonanza day, but I got swept up in the current of a joint playthrough with my little sister. We took turns playing and finished the game early." -Keaton, 17-07-18 context here is that California Roll is the final boss music in this game. we took turns playing but i was the one who beat the final boss! i win! i'm winning! i'm a winning woman! :( |
the result of the contradictions between "love is easy, like coming home or an inside joke", "i need my lover to help me get myself over me," and "i can't be of use to you when i'm in just as bad a place," all wrapped in a setting where every single friend and family member wants the hot goss on your newest breakup
maybe one day | ||
i still cannot believe i went through Durango late in January and didn't think to even shoot them a text. and for what? so i could get back home before sundown? bullshit. there are things more important than that.
speaking of very good but very awkward,
there aren't a lot of "my older sibling committed suicide" songs out there, so i must grieve through skin grafts from love songs and i think this donor is both very fitting and extremely good at reminding me that this is a love song and not that other kind i was saying.
that^ song assumes i could've done anything about it. this one doesn't |
OOIOO - SOL | |
fun. - Some Nights | |
Kimbra (feat. Tommy Raps & Pink Siifu) - LA Type
fun. - All The Pretty Girls
Ween - Captain | |
The Format - If Work Permits | the result of the contradictions between "friendship is easy, like coming home or an inside joke", "i need my friends to help me get myself over me," and "i can't be of use to you when you keep ignoring my advice," all wrapped in a setting where I insist on posting every single little thing I write, glaring flaws included, to this dumb fuckin' website |
Kimbra - Gun | |
XTC - That's Really Super, Supergirl
Bent Knee - Pause | |
Ben Levin - Preach to Me | |
Bent Knee - Ermine | |
Ween - If You Could Save Yourself (You'd Save Us All) | i like to imagine that this song is being sung to me, from whoever. |
Ornette Coleman - Civilization Day | no saving yourself without saving (or at least trying your damned best to save) us all. the two must happen simultaneuously.
this playlist is the "saving myself" part of it all, i guess. |
Billy Joel - Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)
Bent Knee - Fighting All My Life
Bent Knee - OMG | |
fun. - Stars | at what point does this album about, as Nicole says, "getting better," become escapism fantasy (the bad kind) and not intensifying fantasy (the good kind)?
is it when all of my social problems are self-made? is it when i have difficulty relating to the problems being alluded to here? |
Nate Ruess - Harsh Light | have i always been this far behind? |
jaimie branch - fly or die | is it when i feel like you're ignoring your setting, your world?
the struggles we face are not merely personal. not just the asshole mom or the friend who won't shut the fuck up. there's the societal element, too. there's the fact that the profit motive has never been compatible with the creation of a healthy society. this hot trend, this therapyspeak: its goal isn't to help you out. it exists to make pawns of us all, it exists to remove us from the board. to make personal salvation, and not societal health, the main aspiration of one's life. fly or die. either we fly, together, united against the oppressor, or we all die. |
jaimie branch - theme nothing
Bent Knee - Not This Time | free Palestine. end imperialism. end capitalism. |

oh, sweet summer child:
where has the desire for silence led us?
abandoned, loveless, | |
confused, desperate, | |
stuck in a rut, in a grave whitey dug long before you were anyone or anything,
wishing you could leave, be something, someone else, somewhere better.
↓ ↓ ↓ ↓ ↓ ↓ | well... |
in with the outro and out with the old, i say!
turn your ambition outwards, into the streets →
to overthrow the genocidal, the union-buster, the sinking-ship capitalist →
to unite as a city among true peoples →
in solidarity, forever, never to be defeated → → → ...
if we're going to engage with this good ending, i figure it might be a good idea to see the bad one, too. lucky this album exists so i don't have to spend more time in it than i need.
and "i need" is not a lot of time, either. by my count, the totality of this ending has been avoided since 2015 or so, whichever summer it was we watched Steven Universe together in your room. and thank god for that.
fun. - Be Calm | |
Modest Mouse - Heart Cooks Brain
fun. - Walking The Dog | |
Taylor Swift - You Belong With Me | a good song for heartbreak because, like Inches and Falling, it's actually fun to listen to and sing. and is also not shitty (unlike, say, Shawn Mendes - Treat You Better). lighten up a bit! |
Modest Mouse - Trailer Trash
fun. - Walking The Dog II
fun. - One Foot | |
Nate Ruess - Moment | |
Go Ichinose - Opelucid City (White)
Gabriel Kahane - Ambassador Hotel (3400 Wilshire Blvd.)
The Format - Inches and Falling (I Love, Love) | in a similar situation to Walking The Dog & Walking The Dog II, this song has a lot of words and a lot of them make me feel a lot of things |
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - Cowboy Boots
Rebecca Sugar - Time Adventure (live at San Diego Comic-Con 2018) | this is the song they put in their will |
at my best | |
fun. - Why Am I the One | |
fun. - Benson Hedges | |
fun. - At Least I'm Not As Sad (As I Used To Be)
Nate Ruess - Harsh Light
my belief is that Harsh Light & We Are Young are fundamentally the same song about the same thing, which is going out and drinking and ignoring all your problems. the reason i put Harsh Light as being slightly healthier than We Are Young is because Harsh Light actually understands the depths of the problems facing Nate. that song knows it's unhealthy. We Are Young does not (or, if it does, it makes a point to ignore it until tomorrow, ignoring the fact that tomorrow you'll probably be hungover. the actual healthy thing to do would be to start fixing all your problems RIGHT NOW.)
at my worst | fun. (feat. Janelle Monáe) - We Are Young |
