WARNING: while it may be tempting to take as a lesson from this page that listening in quantity is more important than listening in quality, the reverse is actually true. believe me. only listen to as much as you can process in a relaxed and conscious, active fashion.

because of this fact, "in progress" means "currently fooling around with." while it does imply an effort to understand a book's core themes and motives (ie reading the introduction, conclusion, and any standout chapters), it does not imply an effort to completely read the book front-to-back

thanky you

my hot take is that this song is perfect. whatever this song's job is supposed to be, i think it does it so well that nobody ever need try and make a song like it ever again
24-08-11 Kendrick Lamar - The Heart Part 5
every proletarian has tears in their heart. guh, after a sleepless night when i can't stop thinking about Chappell Roan - Good Luck, Babe! and bad solidarity and the upcoming presidential election that once again tries to swallow up and delegitimize and disintegrate every single political action or speech that is more than binary, more than simply going to the ballot box and choosing which stupid prize you win in a game where you win the stupid prize whther you play the stupid game or not, this hits hard.
24-08-07 Bastille - Pompeii
24-08-06 lot of 3 bad songs
bad song Morgan Wallen/Eric Church - Man Made A Bar
profoundly un-feminist

the chorus of this song promotes the idea that women were created specifically to appease men:

Then God made a man, and man got lonely,
he said, "Please lord, if I could only
have an angel to hold in my arms,"
So God made a girl, His best work of art

the chorus of a song is meant to express its themes. that's where they're most potent. so these 4 lines color EVERYTHING else in the song. take for example the bridge,

Sometimes an angel falls too hard
Loses more than just a piece of her heart
And she needs a place to go and make a brand new start

implying an angel (the metaphor for women in this song) can be considered fallen (ie impure, not as heavenly. having engaged in sin, even!) when she leaves a man. this bridge was almost certainly added to try and give a female perspective, to try and balance the song out a little so it doesn't seem as misogynist, but it just ends up reaffirming the chorus's conception of women. and then Wallen & Church double down. those three lines i quoted were the entire bridge. they are DIRECTLY followed by the chorus. the same chorus that outright states that God made women for the purpose of pleasing men.
bad song Taylor Swift - You Need To Calm Down
this song doesn't do a very good job of communicating that homophobia is not simply solved through empowerment. queerphobia, transphobia, and misogyny are structural issues within our society (not just a bunch of rednecks and hillbillies (ew poor amirite hahahahahaha). the rednecks are just the footsoldiers in this culture war), and so the structure needs to change, and change dramatically and uncompromisingly, or be destroyed. it cannot simply be lived in, tolerated, or ignored.

i really appreciate the 3rd verse in which Taylor calls out one of the primary methods of breaking up political movements: destroying solidarity by encouraging factionalism. no one person can fight the power alone.

telling bigots to shut the fuck up is a useful skillset to have. if Taylor uses her haters as target practice first, that's honestly fine with me. songs are allowed to escalate

this song doesn't belong in the company of the other two here. its worst crime is being ineffective, as opposed to being actively harmful. i might even like it more than Chappel Roan - Good Luck, Babe!! or maybe i need to go to bed
bad song Drake - Nice For What
if you don't know anything about Drake or who he is this song is fine. unfortunately for Drake, the child predator, the user of women as sex objects, user of women as pawns in a rap beef that didn't need to go there, the enabler, art exists within a larger context. and Drake is one of the least trustworthy scumbags around. this was true before Kendrick destroyed him and his whole career.

two examples that stick out to me:
1. In My Feelings, the "oh i'm so insecure plz make that ass pop" song
2. Girls Want Girls (feat. Lil Baby), the stupid fucking frat guy "girl you're a lesbian? me too" bullshit.

Nice For What is not genuine. it is meant to lower our guard. don't let it.

also "high school pics, you was even bad then," an actual line in the song

24-07-13 William Cronon - The Trouble with Wilderness; or, Getting Back to the Wrong Nature
hi i read the article on wilderness

I've been trying to write a little blurb that expresses my opinion and ig prove i read it and that i'm glad i read it and like. it's really hard lmao i'm having a lot harder of a time linking this to concrete examples and experiences than i do a lot of other things. mayb that's how the article is written (it's a critique of a philosophy as opposed to a specific work or works in that philosophy) or maybe that's just me. prob both

i'm curious to pick up this John Luther Adams memoir i've had sitting on my book pile since February or so. JLA's this contemporary classical composer whose primary interest is writing pieces about nature and stuff and i think he touches on a lot of those elements of the sublime that Cronon cites. Become Ocean, his most famous piece, certainly does lol. one time i made a thing where i mashed up Become Ocean and Ribs (by Lorde) to try and communicate the idea that like. the city IS a part of nature and is just as sublime if ur willing to listen. and so that's communicated thru the lens of Ribs and the, like, partying and going out with friends of it all juxtaposed against the Pulitzer prize winning, universally recognized by critics as sublime Become Ocean.
-
the sublime shouldn't be synonymous with wilderness. bonus take: it shouldn't be synonymous with solitude, either

i wish Cronon had spent a little more time talking about cities/human settlement in general on a larger, ecological scale as opposed to just talking about this one tree in his backyard or this one puddle a couple blocks away. tbh the distinction between concrete and nature becomes more and more meaningless to me with each passing day. nowadays, the concrete IS nature, the asphalt IS nature, the humans ARE nature. the question is should they be? (answers: concrete & humans yes, asphalt no)

ok blurb finally written. thanks for sending that article! i liked it

(written 24-07-14, published bc i like this blurb a lot)

24-06-09 & 24-07-05 check-in herald of free enterprise
Bent Knee - It Happens the basic story of the social murder of 193 people aboard the MS Herald of Free Enterprise is as follows:

demand for VERY FAST service from the higher-ups at Townsend-Thorensen

increased autonomy (no time for oversight or accountability) and specialization (no time (or money 🤪) for redundancy) among crew members

when the boatswain is MIA and the car deck doors are left open, nobody's willing/able to stick around and see them closed, lest they be fired

boat fall over

you must pick two:
1. autonomous1
2. large-scale with many moving parts
3. able to mobilize effectively under time pressure

speaking of time pressure: every day that passes without a permanent ceasefire and complete divestment from and sanctioning of the state of so-called "Israel" is a day Palestinians are being murdered, their schools and hospitals reduced to rubble, "humanitarian zones" shrinking and shrinking and shrinking, an ever-expanding killing floor. help, please

"permanent ceasefire and complete divestment from and sanctioning of the so-called state of 'Israel'" goes up to the federal government by the way. there is no way to achieve this, nor the communist revolution we need to have down the road, without functioning on a large (very large!) scale

and so your precious autonomy must go.2 sry.

1it's no coincidence that capitalism's most effective unionbusting tactic, its best line of defense against socialism and communism, is scab creation & individualism.

2with some caveats, ofc. you can be trans and stuff that's fine

24-06-24 Chappell Roan - Good Luck, Babe!
if you're gonna talk about compulsory heterosexuality in a song your chorus aboslutely CANNOT be this victim-blaming "good luck, babe!" shit. i promise the "i told you so" is not worth it (and, in fact, active poison). whoever this woman you're singing about is, lift her up and help get her out!

it's a real shame bc i really like the melody n production n stuff. "you'd have to stop the world just to stop the feeling" is a really good line. but it's completely nullified by everything around it
24-06-24 Chappell Roan - The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess
Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl has this weird, "i tried being straight (normal) and hated it" framing of queerness that is not good. lesbianism is not second-class. it is, in fact, wonderful and i love it soso much and nothing is ever going to change that. i'm sure Chappell feels this way too so idk why she wrote that song like that

i used to think Femininomenon fit into this category too but ig i forgot what the word "phenomenon" means. so i would like to correct that now and say that that song is good, actually

my personal opinion is that Chappell Roan is cool. i rlly like Casual n Red Wine Supernova

written 13-04-26, two days later Matthew Yglesias - Further Thoughts on the Bangladesh Factory Disaster
and for good fucking reason. this guy is a piece of shit who took the deaths of 1,134 people and severe injury of around 2,500 more to evangelize about the very economic system that led to this.
his basic argument, expressed in a column the same length as a modern-day twitter thread (about as low-effort too), is "you gotta risk it for the biscuit. if u wanna move up in this world u gotta accept mass death events like this"

juvenile. you should not need to risk being murdered every day just to barely make ends meet.
(and the promise of upward mobility Matt makes here is a total lie btw. if there's one thing to know about capitalism, it's that it's a zero-sum game. so capitalist nations in the imperial core simply cannot allow those in the periphery to attain higher status. because that would mean the core is less alpha now)

honestly all you need to know about this fucker comes from this quote, from his similarly short follow-up, just two days later:
"I think it’s appropriate for rich countries to have more stringent [safety] standards than poor ones, and I absolutely stand by that conclusion."

today is the day the state police came and dismantled the UNM Palestine Encampent.
they arrested 7 of us. brutalised, dehumanized us. two of those arrested were journalists, 2 were students. 23 people total (7 on Nakba day, 16 at the Student Union Building) have been arrested for showing their solidarity. a disproportionate amount of them have been queer and trans, facing extra discrimination.

If you want an idea of what that game was like, just imagine realistic crustaceans that blast the living hell out of each other with neon lasers. The moment I discovered Ace of Seafood in my Steam queue, I knew I had to try it, if only for the novelty of playing a crab armed with phaser cannons.

Before I dive too deep into this one (ha, ocean puns), I’ll admit I played it ahead of time. I planned to give it a test run before my Birthday Backlog Bonanza day, but I got swept up in the current of a joint playthrough with my little sister. We took turns playing and finished the game early."

hi. i gotta retract what i said here. it's too long and too mean and i think a month out i can give a much better summary of my feelings:

every time i try to express my feelings about the thematic/moral material of this album i find myself coming back to the relationship between "learn to code" as a piece of life advice and "go to therapy" as a piece of life advice

i think both of these are individual-level solutions to society-wide problems.
in the case of "learn to code" it's that the highest-paying jobs do not overlap with the ones that are most useful to society
in the case of "go to therapy" it's that the high level of anxiety among today's youth (myself included here) is in large part due to the system of capitalism and its manifestations (genocide in Palestine, climate change, private healthcare, etc.) that constantly opress us.

some people really need therapy though. and some people really like to code and enjoy doing it. so there's also that i guess.

both of these, as pieces of widespread and popular advice, are just extensions of the American Dream. and the American Dream has never been on the side of the working class. its sole purpose is to try and create scabs.

now. how much does any of this has to do with this album specifically? i dunno. will have to think on it and listen a lot more times. this is just a concern i have.

amendment 24-04-21: added Bent Knee - Lawnmower and changed Route 209 to night instead of day.
this playlist is really weird for me because the vibes are pretty spot on but a lot of the lyrics don't really match with my or Keaton's experiences. i've become a vibes girl now. "so what?" i hear you say. I DON'T WANNA BE A VIBES GIRL! i don't vibe, this is my entire schtick. i am the straight woman to 🫵your🫵 antics!

i am the earth.
i am the cool dirt
and the warm sand.
i am hopefully not as much of a jerk as

(i think)
you think i am.

24-04-21 Bent Knee - Lawnmower
24-04-20 ann/kqa live show
listen. i have said a lot about ann - 26 & kqa - kqa on here. let it be known that i do this because i am invested in these people (i say, burying the lead that they are, in fact, my friends). i want the stuff they make to be really good, and the both of them are more than capable of that (and have already made a lot of really good music, too!) whether or not this saves my soul i will leave to the jury to decide but. at least you know my motives
24-04-19 & 20 check-in cassandra
"cassandra" as a title is a refernece to this piece of lore from Fantasy High: Cassandra is the goddess of doubt and the twilight. awkward, right? i love it.
OOIOO - SOL
fun. - Some Nights
Kimbra (feat. Tommy Raps & Pink Siifu) - LA Type
fun. - All The Pretty Girls
Ween - Captain
The Format - If Work Permits the result of the contradictions between "friendship is easy, like coming home or an inside joke", "i need my friends to help me get myself over me," and "i can't be of use to you when you keep ignoring my advice," all wrapped in a setting where I insist on posting every single little thing I write, glaring flaws included, to this dumb fuckin' website
Kimbra - Gun
XTC - That's Really Super, Supergirl
Bent Knee - Pause
Ben Levin - Preach to Me
Bent Knee - Ermine
Ween - If You Could Save Yourself (You'd Save Us All) i like to imagine that this song is being sung to me, from whoever.
Ornette Coleman - Civilization Day no saving yourself without saving (or at least trying your damned best to save) us all. the two must happen simultaneuously.

this playlist is the "saving myself" part of it all, i guess.
Billy Joel - Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)
Bent Knee - Fighting All My Life
Bent Knee - OMG
fun. - Stars at what point does this album about, as Nicole says, "getting better," become escapism fantasy (the bad kind) and not intensifying fantasy (the good kind)?
is it when all of my social problems are self-made?
is it when i have difficulty relating to the problems being alluded to here?
Nate Ruess - Harsh Light have i always been this far behind?
jaimie branch - fly or die is it when i feel like you're ignoring your setting, your world?
the struggles we face are not merely personal. not just the asshole mom or the friend who won't shut the fuck up.
there's the societal element, too. there's the fact that the profit motive has never been compatible with the creation of a healthy society.
this hot trend, this therapyspeak: its goal isn't to help you out.
it exists to make pawns of us all, it exists to remove us from the board.
to make personal salvation, and not societal health, the main aspiration of one's life.

fly or die. either we fly, together, united against the oppressor, or we all die.
jaimie branch - theme nothing
Bent Knee - Not This Time free Palestine. end imperialism. end capitalism.
24-04-19 jaimie branch - Fly or Die

fun. - At Least I'm Not As Sad (As I Used To Be)
24-03-17 & 24-04-09 check-in keaton 3
hi keaton. i wanted to do a little thought experiment for this one:
what if you hadn't succeeded and you were still here? what's the good ending of all this look like? who were you? who could you be? who could you have been?
theaudience - Running Out Of Space oh, sweet summer child:
Ween - Oh My Little Country Cottage where has the desire for silence led us?
Satya - Ten abandoned, loveless,
Rav - Dead End confused, desperate,
Abdou El Omari/Naima Samih - موسيقى مونريال‎ stuck in a rut, in a grave whitey dug long before you were anyone or anything,
Nate Ruess - AhHa wishing you could leave, be something, someone else, somewhere better.
↓      ↓      ↓      ↓      ↓      ↓ well...
The Format - Career Day in with the outro and out with the old, i say!
Ween - Drifter In The Dark turn your ambition outwards, into the streets →
Raw Poetic (Feat. Archie Shepp) - Blank Canvas to overthrow the genocidal, the union-buster, the sinking-ship capitalist →
Waxahatchee - Arkadelphia to unite as a city among true peoples →
The Format - Snails (Live) in solidarity, forever, never to be defeated → → → ...

Ben Levin Group - Freak Machine: 1 if we're going to engage with this good ending, i figure it might be a good idea to see the bad one, too. lucky this album exists so i don't have to spend more time in it than i need.

and "i need" is not a lot of time, either.
by my count, the totality of this ending has been avoided since 2015 or so,
whichever summer it was we watched Steven Universe together in your room.

and thank god for that.
Ben Levin Group - Freak Machine: 2
Ben Levin Group - Freak Machine: 3
Ben Levin Group - Freak Machine: 3.5
Ben Levin Group - Freak Machine: 4
god, it was the decision to end up in Pecos, wasn't it? you didn't mention it at all. not even the note. was it? it's never just one thing, isn't it?
24-04-07 Ween - Quebec
Ween is maybe the sketchiest mainstream (they're mainstream enough for me, okay) band ever. i think if i ever met a "real" Ween fan, the type that thinks that Pure Guava is their best album or that 12 Golden Country Greats deserves another listen (it does not), i'd immediately wish i hadn't. so that's the preface i want to give before i say: yeah i like this album. maybe my hobby in the midst of all this playlist-making and hiking-training will be having more opinions about Ween than my old buddy john would probably want me to. because fuck Ween. they suck. a lot. but how much? and when do they suck the most? (it's 12 Golden Country Greats. fuck you for making that.) have they, through sheer and total dumb luck, taught us something? maybe
24-03-18, 26, & 31 check-in keaton
fun. - Be Calm
Modest Mouse - Heart Cooks Brain
fun. - Walking The Dog
Taylor Swift - You Belong With Me a good song for heartbreak because, like Inches and Falling, it's actually fun to listen to and sing. and is also not shitty (unlike, say, Shawn Mendes - Treat You Better). lighten up a bit!
Modest Mouse - Trailer Trash

Nate Ruess - Moment

Gabriel Kahane - Ambassador Hotel (3400 Wilshire Blvd.)

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - Cowboy Boots
Kate Bush - The Painter's Link -> Kate Bush - Sunset
Rebecca Sugar - Time Adventure (live at San Diego Comic-Con 2018) this is the song they put in their will

24-03-04 Chapter 4: The Butterfly and the Toad
in progress Part II: Man
24-03-26 Chapter 5: The Curse of Akkad
god this and chapter 3 are just. not fun to read. in a bad way that, instead of making me want to go out and do activism, make me want to write about how much i hate this "here is this scientist, here is them saying some stuff nonchalantly about the biggest disaster to ever happen to humanity, and then going back to looking at some fucking ice or whatever." and then Elizabeth Kolbert going like "so i went to this glacier that's melting and i held this piece of pottery from the ancient abandoned-cuz-drought city... and then i went back." NO. you have not earned your "i turned around and headed back." where's any activism? i am on page 122 of 278 and we haven't met a single person who has gotten angry about this. NOT ONE. but we've run into the US gov't about a half-billion times, and each time Kolbert lets them off the hook.

on pg. 117 she quotes this paleoclimatologist (paleo. ugh. the only time i've actually seen any issues affecting real ppl in this book so far was chapter ONE.

now. this book was mostly written before Hurricane Katrina. mostly, it was published in 2006 and UPDATED in 2015. and from looking in the index, do you want to guess how many times Kolbert mentions Katrina? ZERO. not fucking once. ... .anyways,) who says the political system can't listen to climate alarms. can't??? you mean won't. just two sentences before you said "we" won't prepare, though. buddy. i can barely do shit about climate change. i can do activism, sure, but in the end it's the political system who takes bribes from oil companies, it's the political system who ignore scientists, and it's the POLITICAL SYSTEM who left people dead and homeless in New Orleans after Katrina hit. god.
24-03-22, check-in Nate Ruess cinematic universe
been listening to a lot of fun. so much so that i can reliably figure out how well i'm doing by which song i relate to the most at any given moment

at my best fun. - One Foot -> fun. - Stars
(where I normally am) --->  fun. - Some Nights (intro) -> fun. - Some Nights
fun. - Why Am I the One
fun. - Benson Hedges
fun. - At Least I'm Not As Sad (As I Used To Be)
Nate Ruess - Harsh Light
my belief is that Harsh Light & We Are Young are fundamentally the same song about the same thing, which is going out and drinking and ignoring all your problems. the reason i put Harsh Light as being slightly healthier than We Are Young is because Harsh Light actually understands the depths of the problems facing Nate. that song knows it's unhealthy. We Are Young does not (or, if it does, it makes a point to ignore it until tomorrow, ignoring the fact that tomorrow you'll probably be hungover. the actual healthy thing to do would be to start fixing all your problems RIGHT NOW.)
at my worst fun. (feat. Janelle Monáe) - We Are Young

if you realize that Harsh Light used to be a fun. song before fun. split up, you realize that this list is all fun., which i feel kinda bad about given how much Nate seems to hate fun. (or at least where he was at while fun. was still active) nowadays. no The Format songs on here, either. I just listened through Dog Problems and am still obsessively going through fun. stuff so

yeah. sorry Nate

24-02-13 Katy Perry (ft. Skip Marley) - Chained To The Rhythm
this song is good because it just radiates bad vibes. (some of those bad vibes are indeed intended by Katy, Sia, and the rest of the people who helped make it. a lot are strays.) it is impossible to listen to it and not feel a little sick afterwards. songs like this are good to keep around

24-01-28 Well There's Your Problem - Episode 149: Ghost Ship Fire
normally, i wouldn't just put a podcast episode on here, for the same reasons i don't put every single youtube video i watch on here. but this is important. this episode of my fav stupid little engineering disasters podcast hits really close to home for me (and a lot of other people, as evidenced its comments section). a fire breaks out at a party at a DIY venue in Oakland, a city with housing prices so ridiculously high it's hard for FIREFIGHTERS AND TEACHERS to live IN THE AREA THEY SERVE; 36 are dead. Some of those 36 killed were musicians, artists, people who give a city its culture, people who are then forced into squalid living conditions, homelessness, fire-disaster-waiting-to-happen-level-sketchy housing and communal spaces. a number of these alternatives, people cast out by the rest of society, would've been queer. been trans. been like me and you.
.
just. listen to the episode. it can be difficult in places but i promise it's worth it.
